The Crown: what’s the real story?
Who knew ...
One royal palace sits on the site of a medieval leper hospital?
Just off the Mall is the grave of a Nazi dog?
Just off Whitehall you can stand where Henry VIII would have knocked you over when jousting?
We are all broadly familiar with many stories about the British monarchy: from TV and film, from books and from visits to see the changing of the guard or Westminster Abbey or other such standard tourist haunts. But we don't stop to ask how this weird institution has lasted so long, especially when most other countries have long since dispensed with it.
Exploring the more than one thousand year history of Westminster can help answer this question, revealing a fascinating story of royal reinvention and adaptability. How else do you survive scandals, executions, beheadings and Civil War? Through exploring the sites of four palaces, two parks and countless intriguing stories we can paint a picture of how different monarchs chose to fulfil the office.
